Over the weekend, the Popticals team participated in the annual Pedal the Cause bike challenge to help provide funding for cancer research. Events kicked off Saturday night with Taste the Cause, where pedalers were treated to some of St. Louis’s top restaurants and their most popular dishes. Some of the restaurants included Annie Gunn’s, Brasserie and FarmHaus.

While there, the team got to enjoy the Kids Challenge, where kids rode around a half-mile looped course as many times as possible and raised money for each lap. Then there was the Barefoot Cruiser Cup, four person relay teams racing around the track on beach cruisers with prizes going to fastest, best costume and most spirited. All of this was back dropped by live music from local talent Javier Mendoza and the night finished off with an inspirational speech by Leisa Zigman. Got our gear checked out (best sunglasses for cycling: check), did a little shopping, enjoyed a few drinks, and met up with friends old and new. Everyone is super friendly when you are all coming together and have a common goal of supporting an amazing cause.

It rained a bit Saturday night, but that didn’t dampen the festivities. Plenty of room under the tent to stay dry.

Sunday morning we arrived at Ride Village early to get the day started off right, watching the sun come up over the St. Louis Arch and enjoying some coffee from Kaldi’s and a wonderful breakfast of fresh fruit, granola and yogurt. At 9 a.m. the 25 milers set off on the course. It was a brisk morning, but seeing all of the amazing volunteers and people cheering us on along the way made it worth it.

A beautiful day for a ride.

Ted stops for a quick boogie break before continuing on.

Plenty of rest stops along the way to refuel with the turnaround at the Halfway point and Mary Institute Country Day School (MICDS), where we were treated to a DJ and the MICDS cheerleaders dancing and cheering us on. Our very own Ted Wright got in the spirit and danced along with them for a while before it was back to business and heading off to finish the ride. A couple mishaps along the way, like chains falling off the gears, helmet issues and trying to keep our GoPro going to capture a few of the moments along the way.

After the ride, back to Ride Village to enjoy some free massages and stretching, open bar, live music and lunch from Sugarfire Smokehouse. The Popticals Team, with the support of our friends, family, vendors and partners, raised $1,770 so far to support cancer research and the event overall raised $1.7 million. Thanks to all of the amazing sponsors, 100% of funds raised by riders go directly to the cause. This was the 4th year for the event and the 2nd year Popticals has participated, and we’re looking forward to doing it for years to come.
Good friends, good food, live music and a great cause.
Ted and Tim high-five
